Move-on Lifeskill

LifeskillsPic

The move-on lifeskill is an integral part of the preparation process for independent living.  Move-on can be a difficult area for many to contemplate; the cycle of moving from one place to another can be accompanied by unhappy memories and experiences.

Putting things off however can lead to rushing through the process, only adding stress to what can be a challenging time anyway.
Friends First has sought to promote a culture that prioritises move-on planning and preparation from the outset of a persons stay.
Friends First have found that time to think through the process of moving on and support to make helpful plans and goals contributes toward a more successful and less stressful experience.

The move-on lifeskill is run on a weekly basis; initially time is spent understanding and thinking through what the process of moving on means to the individual. As time progresses plans can be made and goals set so, come the time to move, the sense is one of being ready – not rushed!

Often, issues from the past are a huge factor in a person’s accommodation history. Life controlling problems, rooted in painful historical circumstances, can undermine and disrupt a person’s ability to build solid foundations into their lives.

The move-on lifeskill is not a counselling time but often the success of a person’s home is interlinked with a person’s well being – After all, a home is not just the four walls but the person in them!
Seldom do people set time aside to think, plan and prepare for their futures.

The move-on lifeskill is an opportunity to learn from the mistakes of the past, to build on successes, to highlight pitfalls and to promote behaviours and plans that will help people not only to reach their goals but to maintain them over the long term.

“The move-on lifeskill uses tools like mind maps, thought records and scaling exercises to help draw out thoughts, feelings, concerns, ideas and hopes for the future.”
